This coming year marks some significant changes for the Rise Above BMX Team that may affect you whether you hire us for BMX events or not. Changes include a new, upgraded team called Rise Above PRO complete with a free Xgames bike for each day you hire it, Xgames bikes available for sale through us for promotion at all schools whether you work with us, another BMX team, or no BMX team at all and a new price option for 4 events in a day. Each of these things is detailed more in depth below so if you are interested please read on. Also, if you do hire, might hire, or will hire us it is very important that you read the new cancellation policy at the bottom of the email, as I am going to enforce it.

Free Bikes in 2010 when you hire Rise Above PRO!

For 2010 we have created a brand new team! We used a revolutionary new 26ft 5th wheel trailer design to complement a larger box jump complete with an integrated sound system to revolutionize the BMX show experience. And we figure what better name for it than Rise Above PRO! The crew has tested the ramps for the last two months at select locations and everyone from riders to clients have been giving great feedback!

When clients talk, we listen. It seems a simple idea, we know, but for a long time many have asked if there was a way for us to get good quality BMX bikes at a competitive rate and make them available to be given away at our shows. This question has gone unanswered by many teams in the past but not us, we finally gave an answer and it is YES! We have partnered with XG3, (X game’s official product line) to provide customers of Rise Above with good quality BMX bikes.

The Details – For each day you hire the Rise Above PRO Team you will receive 1 free XG3 bike. There is no limit! If you hire Rise Above PRO for 10 days you will get 10 free bikes. It’s that simple. Dates are limited and all are sold on a first come/first serve basis. The earlier you book the more likely you are to be able to take advantage of this great deal.

But these bikes are available for more than just our PRO team customers, they are available to all of our customers, as well as non Rise Above customers and really just about anyone. PRO team customers get them for free, to all others there is a charge. Please call for details.

New price for 4 shows in a day.

Occasionally in the past there has been a need to perform 4 shows in a day. Scheduling it is not easy and nobody prefers that we perform at 4 schools in one day but every so often the need to do this presents itself. We have handled each instance of this as it popped up in the past. Going forward, if you are in a situation where you need 4 events in a day the price is $2200 for the day.

Our New Cancellation Policy

Starting at the beginning of 2010 we are enforcing a new cancellation policy. More than 30 days before an event(s) you previously scheduled with us, we will contact you to verify your event(s). If at that time you agree to reserve the dates you are then responsible, in full or in part, for payment of the specified date regardless of rescheduling or cancelling on behalf of you or your schools.

Fees for cancellation or rescheduling are as follows:

If you or your school cancels or reschedules after we verify but more than 30 days before the event then you are responsible for payment of $550 per day cancelled OR rescheduled.

If you or your school cancels or reschedules within 30 days of a performance then you are responsible for payment of $1,100 per day of events.

If you or your schools reschedule the above fees are in addition to the normal per day rates that will then be applied to that date which was rescheduled to.

In addition to taking physical risks our performers leave their homes for months at a time to make these BMX events possible. We always try to schedule events in a way that is both cost effective for you and provides a fair compensation to our riders. Last minute cancellations hurt our riders more than anyone and that is not fair to them. When events are cancelled last minute they end up sitting in a hotel, not getting paid. They don’t deserve this and that is the reason I am enforcing this cancellation policy starting this season.

If you schedule an event within 30 days of its performance then you will be responsible for payment in full upon scheduling.

I will gladly still hold dates for a reasonable amount of time while you confirm with your schools, but once you confirm the fees specified above will apply. If you have any questions or concerns please let me know.
There is a list of topics at the top that I discuss throughout so you can skim to what matters most to you individually. I encourage everyone to at least look it over. With each passing season we grow better at what we do and I want this trend to continue. As always, constructive criticism is welcome from any and all of our clients. Sprinkled throughout is plenty of information that most everyone should find useful. Detailed below are some innovative new ideas that I think will help all of you, as well as our teams, to get better results from our working relationship. I hope all of you have a great year!

New website and what to expect from it- We have just finished a new team website that we are really excited about. www.riseabovebmx.com All of the important information you need to know about us can be found on it. It also serves as a great place for students to go to learn about our team, watch videos of us riding and read up on their favorite team riders. Feel free to use it for whatever promotional purposes you deem necessary. Another great thing about the new site is that you can go on it and download our demo video, posters and autograph sheets whenever you want. With the click of a mouse you can have an infinite number of print size poster for all of the riders to sign at your schools.

How to get promotional materials (ex. DVDs, posters and cost efficient autograph sheets)- www.riseabovebmx.com/media is where you can go to view all of our promotional materials. www.riseabovebmx.com/downloads is where you can go to download any of it for whatever your needs are. You can also bring up the site and play the video straight from it during your kick-offs if you want to. And finally, for those of you that are a little less computer savvy, I am still happy to send you whatever you may need through the mail or walk you through how to get it off of our website.

Our new bike give-a-away program and how you can use it to drive your sales (it’s free to you)- This year I am giving my bike away to a kid from one of the schools we perform at. Detailed information can be found at www.riseabovebmx.com/winbike but ill sum it up here for you. Any client of ours who wants to participate can, free of charge. All you have to do is email me a list of your VIP students from whatever schools you want to be in the drawing. At the end of the spring season I will select one at random and during their last week of school (or whenever works best for them) I will personally deliver my bike to the winning student. You can refer students to our site to build interest. Again, it’s free to you. The goal of this program is to help drive your sales and keep the kids excited about us! I don’t think who wins it matters as much as making sure each kid knows that it could be them, all they have to do is make sure they are a top seller and they have a good chance. If the program gets positive feedback this season then we will continue it into the future and ideas concerning it are welcome!

Our new innovative “Ron Thomas Rise Above Scholarship”- This is not something that I think will help any of you personally but I wanted to mention it. To the best of my knowledge there has never been a scholarship given to a bike rider or skate boarder for being exceptionally talented or hard working or intelligent. If these sports are to survive and gain as well as maintain respect from both the nation’s and the world’s perspective then we need to tie them to positive attributes, such as education. We cannot simply be stuntmen that land on our heads for a living. This is something I feel strongly about so I started the “Ron Thomas Rise Above Scholarship” this year. For detailed info you can visit www.riseabovebmx.com/scholarship but basically it is a small scholarship in my hometown this year and it is going to be given to one bike rider or skateboarder that wants to pursue higher education. It is going to take into consideration athletic talent, future plans of higher education, and personal character with greater weight given to the latter two. I hope to grow it substantially in the years to come. I know that mentioning this to your schools may make both us and you look good in their eyes so feel free to do so if you would like. This program is new so any thoughts or ideas concerning it are appreciated.

2009 pricing – In short, our pricing is the same as it was for 2008. Depending on your location, prices vary so I am not going to state a specific price for everyone here. There has however, been some confusion as to how we charge and I want to clear that up. WE CHARGE BY THE DAY, not by the show. The confusion lies in the fact that some people think it is a per-show rate. It is easy to get confused, I know, but hopefully this helps to clear up that confusion. If for example, in your area, we charge say $600 for a 3 show day and $400 for a 1-2 show day (we don’t charge that price anywhere obviously) then it is easy to come to the conclusion that you are paying $200 per show. And if you tell your schools that, you would be correct…unless something happens. If, for whatever reason, all but one show is cancelled then the cost would be $400 for that one show. Our lowest day rate is for ONE OR TWO shows. If we charge per show and end up with one show in a day we are going to be operating at a loss and no sustainable business can do that. If any confusion remains please call me, I would be happy to better explain.

Credit Cards are now accepted- This is pretty self explanatory. We do accept major credit cards now however we charge a 3% fee because they charge us that. Like all businesses, we obviously prefer not to charge using credit cards, nor do we profit from charging you this extra 3% but there are inevitably times when it is the best option for some of you so to accommodate that we can accept them, though there is an extra cost.

Now accommodating the West Coast too- We are now a nation-wide team, and this is for a couple of reasons. We currently have two teams that service the East coast and we are getting all our ducks in a row to begin a third specific to the West, though no official date has been set as of yet. Our service area has consistently been reaching westward for the last couple of years and we are approaching the point where we have enough work out there to make the journey worthwhile for everyone. We are going to start accepting work out west because our demand is growing and we want to establish clientele before we have a team specific to that region. So please, if your West Coast co-workers ask you about BMX teams, don’t hesitate to mention our name!

What happens when the weather is bad and/or you have to perform inside? – As many of you know and have experienced, when the weather is bad we simply move the show inside, so long as the school has a sufficient gym…which begs the question, what is a sufficient gym? Well, a gym of just about any size will do. The larger the better obviously but it is very rare that we encounter a gym not large enough for a performance. What is worthy of mention and often makes a ramp performance impossible is a gym that is not on the first floor. It is important that you know that we cannot move our ramps up or down a flight of stairs. In these instances we sometimes perform a ground show, though it is not nearly the caliber that our ramp show is. When scheduling performances with us it is important to have a plan B incase of bad weather. If you choose the ground show option you are still responsible for payment as originally agreed.

What we prefer to do, if a ramp show is impossible inside of any given school, is to re-schedule and attempt an outside show at a later date. There may or may not be additional fees that result. If we can make a decision before incurring costs then the re-scheduling is free. If the re-scheduling takes place after we have incurred costs then your fee is equal to those costs plus a small charge for the rider’s time. For example, if after the riders leave there current location and drive 7 hours to perform for you then the show is cancelled, you could expect a fee of the cost of gas plus about $150-200 for the riders time. Fee’s will vary to reflect what is fair, reasonable and applicable.

We prefer to never re-schedule a show and NEVER charge an additional fee! Although, sometimes these things are inevitable, we never profit as a result of charging a fee. It is always our goal to only make a living through providing service that we are proud of and the sole purpose of any extra fee we charge beyond that is to cover expenses we incur in the pursuit of that goal when weather and/or scheduling complications make the accomplishing thereof impossible. All instances are judged on an individual basis and we are more than happy to try and resolve any scheduling problem in a mutually beneficial way.

Am I myself, Ron Thomas, going to be at your event? – In short, maybe. Currently I have 2 teams that are full time during the busy season and a third in the works that is going to be specific to the Western Regions. As you can imagine, the “behind the scenes” work is already large and growing. There is a lot of attention to detail that goes into producing the great services we offer. Take one look at our equipment or website and it is obvious that I go the extra mile in every aspect that I physically can. In addition to the teams, I take classes at Penn State University to continue to learn how to do what we do better from a business stance. So in summary, I do perform at my team’s events, I do still keep current with the athletics involved that have provided the fertile soil for my business but I cannot be in multiple locations at once. I’ve hired extremely talented managers to stand in my place on location when I cannot be there in person. I feel that it is in everyone’s, especially our clients, best interests to make sure that, as a company, we do the best job we can on all fronts and that requires me to not personally attend a lot of events. If I attended all of the events we could only provide for a fraction of those desiring them. Please continue reading to learn about our exceptionally talented managers.

2009 Team managers – All of our events this year will be managed onsite by some combination of myself (Ron), Dan Sieg, and Eric “Vinny” Vasquez. Trust me, I know how important issues like punctuality and professionalism are. Both my managers and I realize that without those bases covered there would be no bike show to speak of. Below I will give you a quick overview of each Dan and Eric.

Dan - Dan is a BMX show veteran. He has rode for several companies over the years and some of you may have become familiar with him but the Dan you know as a rider differs greatly from the Dan you will come to know as a manager. Dan’s riding speaks for itself. He is one of only 30 riders in the world that quailified for the AST Dew Tour, the worlds premier Action Sports Tour. On a professional level Dan is excellent! He is punctual, comes across very well on the microphone and works well with all levels of school faculty. He is a very talented rider and we are very proud of the professional manager he has become.

Eric – Eric has rode for this team since its very first performance. Over the last couple of years he has become exceedingly talented on a bike. I have never once, ever heard a bad thing about his riding from anyone at a performance. He is astonishing. On the microphone he is energetic and charismatic. He is always on time. In a bike accident years ago he knocked his front teeth out but I am happy to say that this year, for Christmas, the team got him new teeth! We are honored to have Eric as a part of our family.

Vinny’s new teeth- Happy holidays Vinny!! (see paragraph above)

What we require to perform - We need a performance area sufficient to perform, out doors a 20’ by 100’ should do. (see www.riseabovebmx.com/questions for more details) Also, new this year, we are going to be using contracts of all performances. The main purpose of them is to answer any questions and outline all specifics prior to our performances. As you will see when you get yours, specific prices are going to be flexible when it comes to things such as rescheduling or weather complications. You can return the contracts to us either by mail or fax. All of our contact information can be found at www.riseabovebmx.com/contact

If you have already scheduled a performance with us for this year you can expect to receive your contract via e-mail sometime this month.
